Psychology degree lays foundation for lyrical genius of new artist Jasz

LYNN, MA. – It’s appropriate for a musician who loves jazz music – especially the saxophone – to adopt the name Jasz as his stage name. But when that musician is a hip-hop artist whose rhymes are making waves in the rap community, the name stands out.

And that’s exactly what Jasz hopes his music will do over the next year as he begins to release a series of singles he’s been working on for the past three years.

“I have a lot of different sounds,” Jasz said. “Sometimes I have a trap sound, but sometimes I’m really jazzy and create poetic music. Sometimes I’m soulful, and sometimes I have a really 90s, hip-hop sound. It’s all me and it’s all original, and I hope that these singles will show different sides of me. I know who I am, but the music I put out exemplifies what I mean or feel for that moment. Everything I make a song about has been inspired by something in my life – different sides of me with different situations and different feelings. I think everybody is that way – you can feel different ways in your life, and that’s OK. You’re allowed to feel different ways, because that’s when you know authenticity is there.”

The first single from Jasz is called “Rambo,” and it was released earlier in November to rave reviews. Jasz said it’s a fun, upbeat song that he chose to release first because it’s something he knows fans will enjoy and want to listen to again and again.

His next single, “Wake Up”, as well as the video for it were released at the end of November. The song is different from Rambo both in vibe and lyrics. He describes it as a more thought-provoking song with a message that he hopes a lot of fans will be able to relate to.

“It’s a song that came about from me realizing that I don’t have time to be dealing with negative people in my life,” Jasz said. “Whether that’s women or friends or anything with high drama or negativity. I don’t have or energy to invest in negativity, or to fix any bad situations or deal with any of that drama. Every second wasted is a dollar wasted or an opportunity wasted.”

Jasz went on to say that most of his songs will have some sort of positive outlook on his life situations because he doesn’t want to dwell on the negative side of life. Though he’s experienced his share of difficult times over the years, he chose to take a different path and pursued an education – eventually graduating from college with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

“No matter what you’re going through, you don’t have to react the same way most people do,” Jasz said. “If you’re surrounded by drugs, you don’t have to be a drug dealer. Be creative. I can hang with drug dealers, or nerds, or whomever because I’m willing to just be myself. In this world you’re going to run into people who hate you and people who like you, and you just have to be honest and people are going to respect that, and if they don’t then they aren’t real. For me, I chose education, because education is cool. It’s never been cool to be stupid. And I think that’s what allows my music to be different and appeal to everybody. ‘Rambo’ is a fun song, but it’s creative. Everything I saw I try to make it creative. There’s a reason behind what I do, and I hope I make it clear to people through my lyrics and rhymes why I’m doing those things.”
